霧峰林家，為台灣五大家族之一。最早是由林石渡海到台灣定居，1787年林爽文事件，清朝認為林石參與了抗清活動，將林石捕殺。之後林家便在林石長媳黃端娘的帶領下，從原先大里杙（大里）移居阿罩霧（霧峰），重新展開經營。宮保第是清朝同治皇帝因林家第五代族長林文察為國捐軀所追封，也是台灣唯一的一座宮保第。

霧峰林家分頂厝及下厝兩大分支，宮保第園區是屬於下厝系統，園區內分成草厝、宮保第、大花廳三個參觀區域。

The Wufeng Lin Family has two branches: the top house and the lower house. The Gongbaodi Park belongs to the lower house . The park is divided into three visit areas: the grass house, the Gongbaodi, and the Flower stage.

售票處位在第一區「草厝」旁邊的白色平房，園區全年無休，大人票為250元，台中市民憑身分證只要200元，兒童則是125元。

雖然門票需要250元，但它包含了50元的飲料抵用卷跟50元的商品抵用卷，算是相當划算的。又適逢中秋節，園區舉辦了博狀元餅活動，一張門票可以獲得一張博狀元餅遊戲卷。

博狀元餅遊戲區位在「草厝」內的文創商品店內。「草厝」是林家下厝支的「起家厝」，最早約在1837年（道光17年）興建，屬於閩式三合院，分為「廳堂」和「廂房」並設有穀倉和門樓。

旁邊的廂房是文創商品部，也是中秋節博狀元餅的活動地點。博狀元餅源自於廈門，是中秋節時娛樂的一種民俗活動。

第二區的「宮保第」是台灣最大的清代官府宅第，古時候只有皇太子的老師住所才能以此稱呼。因為林家第五代族長林文察死後被追封為「太子少保」所以能以宮保第作為宅第的名稱。

宮保第的大門口有一對青石獅雕，一公一母。921大地震後，有小偷意圖趁亂偷走石獅子，所以加裝鐵欄杆保護。

第二進的「轎廳」，為訪客的下轎處。古時候轎夫將轎子抬到這裡下轎，也稱「落轎樓」。轎廳的門上有祝賀楊水萍夫人81歲「春秋又八千」的壽匾。古代生活以農業為主，春種、秋收便成了一年最重要的兩個季節，所以「春秋」具有一年的含義。或許是八十一歲感覺太少，所以索性把一寫在十的上方成為八千，祝福長命百歲之意。

現存的第三進跟左右廂房(護龍)，初始的宮保第是傳統三合院。後續因詔追封「太子少保」，才陸續增建一、二、四、五進建築。

過了第三進，是第五進，沒看到第四進。聽說是族人修改穿心亭時遭誤拆，雖然仍保留了舊有的分隔磚牆，但可可仍覺得相當可惜。第四進與第五進間採特殊廊院及穿心亭作法。

在林家樑柱上，最常見到的是這樣龍頭魚身的鰲魚裝飾，相傳在遠古時代，鯉魚為了化身為龍，便跳躍過龍門，誰知道在跳躍時龍門剛好關閉，所以只有頭變成龍頭，身體依然保持著魚身，所以稱為鰲魚。

藍天、歇山式屋頂、三燕尾翹脊與陶瓷彩繪神明，四者結合成一幅賞心悅目的景象。

戲台頂端的八卦式藻井，沒使用任何鐵釘，僅用卡榫與斗栱相嵌築構的而成。宗教上八卦具有鎮邪、保佑平安之意。對聲音也有增強共鳴的效果，是實用與吉祥意涵兼具的設計。藻井中央雕琢有花中之王「牡丹」，象徵花開富貴，因此取名「大花廳」。

戲台前的議事廳，是用來接待賓客的地方，在古時候，先議事，後看戲。議事如果不順，後續就不看戲了，這就是「沒戲唱」的由來。
