In 1858, the Qing Dynasty in China was defeated in the Opium War and was forced to open four ports in Taiwan: Tamsui, Keelung, Anping and Takao. Therefore, in 1861, the British officially opened the port of Takao in what is now Kaohsiung Port. And in 1864, the British consulate was moved from Tamsui to Takao, and the customs was officially set up.

The British consulate Takao is divided into two parts, one is the official residence of the consulate on the Shaochuntou Mountain, and the other is the British Consulate by the sea. From the side of the Xiziwan parking lot, You can see the sign leading to the consulate

Because the official residence of the consulate is located on the top of the Shaochuntou Mountain, it is necessary to take a flight of stairs. Shaochuntou Mountain is only 25 meters above sea level, which is a good place for small walks and sports.

When you climb to the top of the mountain, you will see the ticket office. The full ticket is 99 TWD, the preferential ticket is only 49 TWD for students and Kaohsiung citizens, and the residents of Shaochuntou can enter for free.

CoCo bought a ticket for 99 TWD, the tickets can be redeemed for 30 TWD for consumption in the park. Therefore, it is actually not expensive. In addition, the park also provides a voucher for cultural yachts, so that tourists who are interested in taking yachts at the pier can use it together.

From the Shaochuntou Mountain, you can see the passing ships of Kaohsiung Port, and have the advantage of commanding heights, which was a very important strategic position in the early days.

The United Kingdom has built a total of three consulates in Taiwan, namely the “Anping Consulate", the " Fort San Domingo " in Tamsui, and the “consulate Takao " in front of you. Among them, the official residence of the British consulate in Takao is the oldest.

" The British consulate Takao " is a post-Baroque building, designed and constructed by the British. The dimensions used in the construction are both English yards and feet. The main materials of the building are red brick, granite, trihexite, and Yugu stone , wood, etc. Coco likes the continuous semi-circular arcade on the outer wall, which is quite aesthetic.

There are many photos of the past of Kaohsiung Port displayed in the museum. These images witness the history and let people know that this history really existed.

In the Ming and Qing dynasties, the trade silver dollar was the unofficial currency for trade in coastal areas at that time. There are quite a few types of currencies displayed in the museum. In addition to Britain and France, you can also see silver coins from Mexico, Spain, and Japan, which can be imagined , the prosperity of the trade in Takao Port at that time.

The products and catering in the park are managed by “Classical Rose Garden", which is a well-known British tea chain in Taiwan. The British architecture is matched with British tea, and the whole atmosphere seems to be back 200 years ago.

Different from the original stairs, there is a side door next to the official residence of the consulate on the mountain, which is the consulate leading to the sea.

The mountain-climbing trails that connect the mountain and the mountain are quite simple and quiet, and the surrounding natural ecology is rich. Walking in it, it seems that I am a British consul, preparing to go down the mountain to go to work.

The first British consul in Taiwan, Rob. Swinhoe (1836-1877), in addition to the title of diplomat, he was also a very outstanding naturalist. During his time in Taiwan, he devoted himself to collecting various new species, and the Taiwan macaque was officially named because of his discovery. of.

In the scope of the British consulate, people follow the " Takao Consular Port Regulations". In order to confirm the execution scope of consular jurisdiction, it is convenient to set up boundary markers around the consulate to facilitate the distinction between management rights and responsibilities.

James L. Maxwell was the first British medical missionary to set foot on Taiwan soil. Medical missionary is one of the important methods of Western missionary mission in Taiwan. The use of Western medical treatment to show miracles was very popular at that time.

After Takao opened the port, Shaochuntou gradually became the main gathering place for foreign warehouses. After the ships of various countries arrive, they must go to the consulate and customs to deal with related matters, so in addition to the original Han people, they also integrate into the exotic style.

In the early days of the Republic of China, the Japanese government occupied Taiwan, and the British consulate went out. During the Japanese occupation era, the consulate was changed to the Kaohsiung Ocean Observatory, until after the Chinese Nationalist Government retreated to Taiwan, the official residence was changed to the Kaohsiung Surveying and Observatory of the Central Meteorological Administration and the Kaohsiung State Fisheries Test Site.

END

Before leaving, I was reluctant to go back and take a photo. there is no blue sky and white clouds in today , but it also makes Coco feel that the first British-style building in Taiwan is standing silently in the modern building, recording all the loneliness of Takao port.END
