Taiwan- Experience of traveling around the Taiwan by bicycle

When you came to this article, Coco knew that at this moment you have made up your mind to embark on this unimaginable journey. Maybe you are a little hesitant, maybe you are a little scared. However, don’t worry, follow Coco’s way, I believe you can accomplish your dream of " traveling around the Taiwan by bicycle " just like Coco.

Now that you have decided to set off, the first thing to do is to make a route. The Internet recommends “Cycling Route NO.1″. Novices may be unfamiliar with this name. In fact, to put it simply, follow the train station. This route takes Taiwan Line 1 and Taiwan Line 9 as the main axis, and there are many replenishment stations along the way, so there is no need to worry about replenishment. And the whole route has dedicated bicycle lanes, which is quite friendly to cyclists. Most importantly, when you want to be lazy or give up, just buy a train ticket and you can return home safely at any time.

After determining the route, then the choice of bicycle. This is Cocoa’s new bike. As there are several difficult uphills along the way, gear shifting is necessary. Friends who want to ride Ubick around the island, really have to consider. Normally at least 21 speeds, this trip will be easier. There are two saddle bags. The right side is used to store daily clothes, and the left side is used for bicycle maintenance equipment (simple pump, inner tube, tire digging stick, tire patch).

In addition to warning lights, please install more flashlights in front of the car. In some areas, there are no street lights at night. A bicycle phone holder is also necessary. You can use google map to check the map while riding. The most important thing is the bottle cage. Drinking water during the journey is very important. If necessary, install two bottle cages. Cocoa will use a vegetable basket instead because it will be handed over to mom to use after riding the bicycle.

Headgear, sleeve cover, bicycle gloves, bicycle pants, raincoat, helmet, charging cable… etc., personal equipment. Approximately 3 sets of clothes are prepared. Wear two sets of clothes alternately every day, and one set is reserved (or worn at night). A simple -opened kettle is very important. There is no way for you to rotate the mineral water lid during cycling. The power bank must be at least 10,000 mA or more. In addition, please bring a small sub-plug, some small hotels provide only one plug.

For the walking route, it is recommended to go in the “counterclockwise" direction. On the one hand, there are fewer steep slopes in the counterclockwise direction. If you have not trained, you can use your physical fitness training in the western region a few days ago to get your body accustomed to the rhythm of cycling. On the other hand, rounding the taiwan counterclockwise is a better way to enjoy the beauty of the east and west coasts during the journey.

One thing to add is that sunscreen and small medical supplies are also very important. In just one day, the Cocoa’s thigh had been severely sunburned. The next day, he dodges the old man even more, and falls by himself. Fortunately, Cocoa learned about “parking" early on. Importantly, when a situation occurs, parking is definitely wiser than accelerating. Take care of yourself to make the journey complete.

When the physical strength rises, it will be the first hurdle of this journey, the “South Loop Section". The total distance is 49 kilometers, and about 25 kilometers is a continuous uphill, which will be quite difficult for novices. It is recommended to rest in Fangliao One day, set off to Dawu early the next morning. Don’t worry you can’t finish the ride. After a few days of training, you already have the physical strength to complete the South Loop Section. Also, there are very few supply stations on this route. Please prepare two copies of water and food just in case.

The lanes of the South Loop Section are somewhat narrow and the traffic volume is also high. Uphill and the pressure of the car chasing behind can make you a little nervous. Keep calm and rest on the side of the road when you are tired. Remember, the aforementioned “stop" is better than forcibly breaking in.

There are many steep slopes in the Taiwan east. In recent years, due to the renovation of the Suhua Highway, the entire section of the road is very spacious. Going uphill may bring some fatigue, but the entire Pacific Ocean has a panoramic view of your eyes, and all the fatigue is worth it.

The Suhua Highway from Hualien to Yilan had to go through 8 caves and go with large trucks. Friends who do not have a team or supply car protection, please consider your safety and your ability. It is recommended to take a train from Xincheng Station to Suao At the new station, you can experience the feeling of riding a train by bicycle.

You need to buy a train ticket for your bike to get your bike on the train. Moreover, not every train can be boarded. If you want to board a train, please check the time in advance to avoid waiting.

Many people asked Coco, where to stay on this trip. When Coco departed, didn’t know how far could ride, So rode to bicly accommodation near the train station. The accommodation is usually friendly to cyclists. The price of a night is usually between 30 and 40 USD. Note that on holidays, the hotel may be fully booked due to local events. You can use agoda to know the surrounding accommodation in advance. If there is really no room and it’s getting late, just get on the train to the next stop as I said before.

The results of this trip took 19 days in total. This is the speed of a 40-year-old, completely newbie. The riding time is plus or minus 3 hours from 8:00 in the morning to 15:00 in the afternoon. The whole journey is 1053 kilometers and 83 kilometers by train. The average day is about 50 kilometers.

END

Finally, let’s enjoy the results of Coco together. I hope that the next one will be like Coco, and achieve the wish of " traveling around the Taiwan by bicycle". END
