When it comes to iconic snacks in Nantou City, “Qiaotoubian Meatballs" is definitely on the list! Nestled in a red tin house by the side of a Maolu River tributary bridge, this restaurant has been serving its savory aromas alongside the murmuring stream for over fifty years. It’s not just a hotspot for tourists, but also a classic Taiwanese afternoon snack that local students and residents have grown up eating.
Today, let’s step inside this heartwarming historic eatery and taste a classic flavor passed down through three generations!

The moment you step inside, it’s hard not to be drawn to the massive vintage mural on the wall. It reads, “The Spirit of the Meatball Grandma since 1971," depicting Grandma pushing a wooden cart to raise her children back in the day.
From a humble roadside cart to a spacious and clean double-storefront now run by the third generation, this bowl of meatballs carries not only delicious flavors but also the warmth of Taiwanese hospitality refined by time.

The meatballs here are prepared using the traditional low-temperature oil-poaching method. After ordering, the owner skillfully scoops the meatball from the oil, drains it, and drizzles it with their special signature sauce.

The skin thickness is just right. After being oil-poached at a low temperature, it gets an amazingly springy texture without being too tough to chew. You can taste the aroma of the rice paste with every bite.
Gently parting the skin reveals large, solid chunks of fresh local pork. Seasoned with a hint of five-spice and white pepper, the meat is naturally sweet and flavorful.
The best part is the sauce! The sweet white rice paste and the savory soy paste blend flawlessly. It strikes a perfect sweet-and-savory balance that keeps you coming back for more.

At Qiaotoubian Meatballs, the insider way to order is “a set"—meaning one bowl of meatball paired with a bowl of Combo Soup.
The Combo Soup (NT$40 per bowl) is incredibly generous! A simple scoop brings up a bowl full of ingredients: tender, fresh pig’s blood curd, aromatic traditional tofu, and a large pork ball. The broth is enhanced with celery and cilantro, making it refreshing and perfect for balancing out the oiliness of the fried meatball.

Despite being a 50-year-old historic establishment, the dining area is kept remarkably spacious and clean. The large wooden tables and benches overflow with rustic Taiwanese charm, and looking up, you can see a vintage plaque hanging on the wall.

The store layout is also well-planned, featuring a dedicated Takeout Ordering Area and a self-serve utensil station. After finishing your meal, please remember to sort and place your dishes in the Dish Recycling Area by the wall to help keep the environment clean!END
